South American sides gather African intelligence...

Tournaments are like time speeded up - teams can suddenly come together, or fall apart.

Each tournament has its own dynamics, so it would be unwise to draw definitive conclusions for the World Cup from a competition taking place six months earlier.

But if the Africa Cup of Nations is a good opportunity for five World Cup-bound teams to get some competitive match practice, it is also a great chance for their future opponents to do some reconnaissance.

From a South American point of view, there… Continue

(‘In the last minute’)

An experimental story about futebol written in Brazil under military rule, “No último minuto” presents what might have happened had a goalkeeper been the protagonist of Groundhog Day. The invention of video replay may have been the goalkeeper’s nightmare realized. The anxiety-ridden last defender, from t… Continue

Football Tactics...

It is hugely difficult to imagine the future as a radically different place, which is probably why so many visions of the future in the past century have stuck to three basic templates: silver suits and hover-boots; totalitarian nightmare; apocalyptic wasteland. Still, given the way foo… Continue

Cesar is Dead...hail Cesar...

It may be good tele but new Man City boss Roberto Mancini will not have enjoyed watching their 4-3 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

The uncomfortable nature of his appointment, with Mark Hughes taking charge of the game knowing he was sacked, will be a minor thought to… Continue

Arsene Holler...

Arsene Wenger is known as the The Professor but the halftime ear-bashing he inflicted on his Arsenal team at Anfield on Sunday had more in keeping with the “hairdryer” technique often used by his great rival Alex Ferguson.

It was out of character for the Frenchman but it certainly had the desired effect as his team overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 wit… Continue

Tough World Cup draw for Africa...

A heavy dose of reality crashed down upon African hopes of a maiden Fifa World Cup title after Friday's draw pitched the continent's most-fancied teams in challenging groups.

In the build-up to the Cape Town draw, where locals flooded the city centre for the most colourful of street parties, most of the talk centred upon Ghana and Ivory Coast spearheading Africa's unlikely quest.

But now th… Continue

Blatte United Story...

Blatte United was founded in 2004 by a small group of Swedish expats based in New York City.

The ex-pats came to enhance their career in America. But whether their careers were in Advertising, Finance, Restaurants or Movies, they all had one thing in common, an unyielding passion for the game.

Word eventually spread throughout New York about the club and its players. Soon, not only other well-known stars, but also former national team soccer players asked to join. Since then we have enjoyed a lot of success on the pitch as well as some excellent times off it (including some great off the field adventures).

What makes our team unique is its rich mix of individuals, a truly cosmopolitan squad who play football for the love it and in the spirit it should be played. It is this common attitude and our collective backgrounds as sons (and daughters) of immigrant families that bind us together. We are also proud of being perhaps the only football club to have the word 'Blatte' appear in its name!

We are also committed to an alternative football culture that actively challenges the corporate dominance of the game. We support an ideal of internationalism and friendship in football which can stand in opposition to the racism and violence which still persists in some areas of the game. We see football as a common cause that can bring people together and promote peace and understanding.

On our website site you can read about the team's latest developments, from the most recent match report to forthcoming tours. Here also you can get the latest news about the squad, read player profiles and take part in discussions.
